Our Hot Plates series offers attendees a chance to enjoy a delicious lunch and a presentation by a knowledgeable speaker. Our topic for March is Systemic Racism and Educational Measurement, presented by Dr. Michael Russell.

By its nature, systemic racism impacts all aspects of U.S. society. This talk focuses narrowly on systemic racism’s influences on the field of educational measurement and ways in which educational measurement in turn function as a tool for systemic racism. Actions the field, and society more broadly, can take to begin to rectify disparities and deficit narratives produced the uses of educational measures are also explored.

Dr. Michael Russell is a Professor of Measurement, Evaluation, Statistics, and Assessment at Boston College. His research focuses on race, racism, intersectionality theory, and educational measurement, with specific interests in unveiling influences the White Racial Frame has on educational measurement and developing new measures of impacts of oppression on educational experiences and outcomes. He serves on Technical Advisory Committees for several educational testing companies and programs.
